WUG Bid Website Wins International Competition

On Thursday, October 28, the Association of Marketing and Communication Professionals (AMCP) unveiled its 2021 MarCom Award winners. The MarCom Awards are an international creative competition recognizing outstanding achievements of marketing and communication professionals. The North Carolina Summer World University Games (WUG) Bid website (www.ncwug2027bid.com) was named the Platinum Award winner in the Pro-Bono Category. Platinum is the highest award in the competition. The MarCom Awards are intensely competitive, with this year’s event encompassing over 6,000 entries from 41 countries.

“We’re ecstatic to win in such a prestigious and incredibly competitive international competition,” said Wendy Coulter, CEO of Hummingbird Creative Group of Cary. Hummingbird is a Champion Sponsor of the North Carolina World University Games bid and led the creation of the website in conjunction with the North Carolina Bid Committee. The AMCP indicates that the Platinum Award is presented to those entries judged to be “among the most outstanding in the competition.” Winners are recognized for their excellence in terms of creativity, quality, and resourcefulness. “Our bid for the 2027 Summer World University Games is all about winning in international competition,” said Hill Carrow, Chairman & CEO of the North Carolina Bid Committee. “Thanks to our sponsor Hummingbird, we are off to a very promising start.”

Recent WUG Bid Branding Enhancements

Look closely at the North Carolina USA WUG Bid logo included in this news update and you may notice the difference between this “new look” logo and the previous version reflected best by the lapel pin pictured in our October newsletter. While the change from the initials “NC” to the current “North Carolina” might be considered relatively subtle, it is an important tweak to the logo suggested by international sport executives who felt the meaning of “NC” would not be as readily apparent to those outside the U.S as “North Carolina” spelled out.

In a somewhat related change, the presentation of the monthly news updates (starting with last month’s October WUG Bid news) has been enhanced with a new look and format. It’s all part of our goal of continuous improvement as we progress through the international bid process for the 2027 Summer World University Games.

2021 Winter World University Games Cancelled

In another sign of these pandemic times and Covid 19’s continuing devastation in many areas of the sports events industry, yesterday, FISU, international governing body for the World University Games, announced that the 2021 Winter World University Games, scheduled for December 11-21, 2021, in Lucerne, Switzerland, have been cancelled. Blame it on the new Omicron variant of the coronavirus, which, since news last week of its emergence in South Africa, has resulted in extensive new travel bans, restrictions, and quarantine policies around the globe, including in Switzerland, effectively making travel by international teams to, and participation in, the Winter Games virtually impossible. In making the announcement, Eric Saintrond, Secretary General and CEO of FISU, said, “This decision has not been easy to take and is difficult to accept, but the health of everyone is and will always be our priority.”

The next Winter World University Games, scheduled for January 12-22, 2023, will be held right here in the USA in Lake Placid, New Yorkwww.lakeplacid2023.com It is at those Games that FISU is currently slated to announce the winning bid for the 2027 Summer World University Games.
